Thomas Houseago was born in 1972 in Leeds. His single mother imparted to him the marvel and the importance of visual arts, music, and architecture. As a teenager, he experienced two events that had a long-lasting impact on him. The first was the Picasso’s solo show at the Tate Gallery and the photographs of Joseph Beuys’ performance How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare (1965), making much of his early work performative. He studied at the Jacob Kramer College and later attended Central Saint Martins in London.

Ancient Greece and Rome

He incorporates traditional materials such as bronze, plaster, and wood in his work. They are often positioned in contrapposto stances – the body’s weight is on one leg. It was a style prevalent in sculptures of ancient Greece and Rome. One of his notable works is the series of large-scale sculptures titled Moun Room, which gained attention for its imposing and powerful presence. Houseago has also produced works that engage with classical themes and iconic figures, such as his interpretation of the Hercules and Antaeus myth.
